story & synopsis

"Why are there so few people in Sweden and wouldn't it be nice if more foreigners moved in?" - Poster, SVITJOD 2000+

That is the question asked in this short documentary about the empty country in the north of Europe. Sweden contains only eight million people, though much bigger than e.g. France or Spain. Why? Is it because it's far away? Is it because it's so cold? Is it because they don't want any more people there?

Why is it that people are so afraid of change?

Road trippin'

David and photographer Mårten went on a road trip from the very north of sweden down to the south, to explore and investigate what people really think about immigration. The whole trip took 7 days. Most of the time was spent on the road with stop off's in all towns with funny sounding names.

Trying to ruin it!

After editing the film on one of the first versions of Premier on a Power PC Apple, the film was via tape brought over to an Avid. There the animation was added and the film was played out to Beta SP. This beta was tele-cined to s16mm film. The lab technicians were instructed to use the cheapest and "worst" method. The result of this stage was still too good according to the filmmakers. The next step in the process was to destroy the s16mm work copy, putting splices in it, scratching it, writing on it etc. This was done on a Steenbeck table, which was then also used to play the copy back while filming the Steenbeck table's screen with the original DV camera. The visual master was now complete. The interesting fact here was that, when the DV tape master was put back into the AVID to be synced up to the sound, the Steenbeck table had only slipped 2 frames!)
