A thriller drama based on true events. A stabbing in Sthockholm where a young latino stabs an outspoken racist to death. The event got a lot of attention when it happened, so did the film when it was finshed. It was our first film to be screened at the market in Cannes, 1997.

story & synopsis

This story is based on a true incident: the murder of a young (20 year old) racist in a Stockholm suburb by a group of very young (15-18 year old) Latino boys during the Stockholm Water Festival in 1992.

The story was found by Leon Flamholc while doing research for the documentary "Racist Sweden?". The material made a strong impression on Leon and he wrote the script very much inspired by reading the police-files from the interrogations. In the style of a dramatically executed docu-drama we follow the police interrogation starting on the morning after the night the murder was committed.

Three story-lines are interwoven with each other - each having a distinct cinematic style to distinguish them from each other. The interrogations in dark high contrast yellow and black. The bus-ride, from the moment that the youngsters get on it and find their antagonist alone and drunk, sleeping in his seat - in black & white, and finally a straight rough, but colorful portrait of the lives of each of the groups of people whose ongoing confrontation results in the killing at the end.

true events & how we decided to do it

The family of the deceased were given a chance to respond to that a film was being made. Several of the victims friends were interviewed and their statements used as background material characters in the film.

The other side was difficult to get a hold of. The young man sentenced to manslaughter was adviced not to speak to media, and although we explained time and again that we were not media he chose not to speak to us until far into the shooting. When he finally did call our production office, he told the story like it really happened, down to the very details of the crime, physical and psychological. With permission we used all this material, and re-wrote the story's whole end sequence only days before shooting it.
